one candle wish

my birthday is next week, and anthropologie got me to celebratin' a little early with this great gift in the mail.

a birthday candle necklace -- very creative, and super adorable

the candle appears to be made of a lightweight resin, and i'm pleased to report it arrived intact, unlike those received by other recipients.

i signed up for their store's loyalty card early in the year, thus putting myself on their mailing list to receive such goodies.

additionally, the card on which the necklace arrived is good for 15% off in-store, certainly a dangerous thought.

(the image above is from another blogger, i couldn't be bothered to photograph it before ripping it open and putting it on.)

adventures in retail therapy

i wanted this jacket

and have hemmed and hawed for literally months about buying it. it wasn't an issue of price, it's just that i'm not sure if it makes me look like linda cardellini circa "freaks and geeks."

witness:

and now it appears to be sold out. which is probably a good thing, because the last thing i want to look like is a freak.

or a geek.

vanity sizing

last weekend i went to old navy in search of some workout shorts/pants that i saw a few months back. they had exactly what i was looking for, but not in my size -- since the last time i was there i've apparently gone down a size. HOORAY! even though they didn't have the bottoms i was looking for, i proceeded to look at the rest of their clothes.

surely you see where this is going.

i tried on nearly 30 items, most of which i really liked, but am trying to avoid spending too much money on clothing when i fully intend on changing sizes again in the near future.

i bought some beach-bum-type shorts for my trip to maui next month, and this t-shirt in 3 different colors, which was old navy's item of the week at just $7 each.

it fits so well, and again, i am down a size in old navy clothes. i've long said that old navy is the king of vanity sizing, which is so very true, but it's still encouraging to know i'm wearing that much of a (supposedly) smaller size.

mixing it up

my family and i went to our cabin for the Easter weekend. on the way there, my sister, her fiance and i decided to stop at one of the only local shopping centers and see what was new. turns out: not much, but i decided i wanted to go into Gottschalks since i'd never been to one, and to scope out their supposed 60% off merchandise liquidation.

what i found there somewhat surprised me.

i imagined Gottschalks to be along the lines of Mervyns and Kohls, which it was, but i wasn't expecting them to carry Lenox and Noritake or have an upscale cosmetics department with lines by Estee Lauder and Lancome. that's where my interest ended, however, as the rest of their merchandise was geared toward an older customer. much, much older, it seemed.

i wanted some new workout sneakers and thought they'd have at least a couple of pairs to choose from, and that perhaps i could score a good deal on something i needed. maybe it was because they were already in liquidation mode, but every single pair of shoes looked like something a grandmother would wear. they had zero even remotely fashionable shoes, much less any sneakers at all. it was puzzling, because apparently liquidation of this store had just begun, which means that they really weren't gearing much merchandise toward a younger consumer at all. sure, they had some apparel by Volcom and O'Neill but that was pretty much it.

this sparked me to comment to my sister (who was even less impressed with the store than i), "this is why they're going under -- they haven't managed to keep up with the times."

unknown to me at the time, others opined the same about Gottschalks skewing toward the older consumer. (sidebar: Labelscar is an awesome site for anyone interested in retail present or history.)

i am sad for those that will lose their jobs due Gottschalks ceasing to exist. most stores are located in already economically depressed areas, and more folks looking for work in a matter of weeks will not help anyone's situation. but it begs the question: could Gottschalks have survived, even just a bit longer, had they modified their merchandise offerings? it's a tough balance to strike, keeping long-term customers while attracting a new base. but for a 105-year-old company, they must have done something right along the way.

social norms

I stopped by an estate sale today and got several goodies for the whopping total of $9. I am becoming such the old lady in my estate sale shopping. At some point I'll have to list the steals I've walked away with. A friend of mine calls it D.P.S., which is short for Dead People's Stuff, and she's being going to estate sales for so long that she's completely immune to the thought of it now. I'm getting there, but there are times where you just go, "this is what it all comes down to -- strangers pawing through your prized possessions, trying to get everything for nothing. " The sale today was definitely D.P.S., as there were half used grocery items pulled from the cupboards for sale, meaning, yeah, someone died for this sale to happen. I didn't see the usual half-used cosmetics, so can one morbidly assume that it was a man that passed away after his wife? I don't like to spend too much time thinking of these things. Anyway, today I got an original, unused "Kennedy for President" bumper sticker, a costume jewelery necklace, a freaking sweet vintage swanky swig hiball glass (too bad there was just one!) and a tiki swizzle stick. Before I know it, I'm going to be the person that I hate with all this random JUNK.

I got a new BlackBerry a couple of weeks ago and am now one of the cool kids with a camera hone again. I forgot how easy it was to snap a pic of something funny and send it to a friend for a laugh. Or to take pictures of ridiculous things at estate sales.

public service annoucement

today's the day california's "hands-free" law goes into effect. if you haven't already done so, you need to purchase a hands-free device to use if you use your cell phone in the car.

newegg has a great deal on a motorola model that's pretty nifty.

grand plan

seems like i just keep having so much fun!

last week i took half of wednesday off to go to a giants game. they won, and taking the train up to the city saved me $25 in parking fees and the headache of driving up there.

thursday i got my hair cut and colored. i'm totally digging my new asymmetrical bob and tri-colored hair.

saturday was jewels' shower, and much fun was had. after a hanging out with friends for a few hours afterwards, i headed to downtown san jose for dinner and drinks with my good friend tara.

sunday morning came around too early, and before i knew it we were on the road to the alameda antiques by the bay, more commonly known (by me) as the alameda flea. oh, what goodies there were to be had! i spent a little over $100 and got all kinds of good stuff. including two globes (one on a stand!) bringing my total globe purchase count for the week at, erm, three.

creepy dolls

books!

some of our purchases

after the flea, we headed to the scharffenberger chocolate factory for lunch at their cafe. such delicious food!

grilled cheese sandwich

burger and fries

brownie

here's to having more great weeks!

p.s. -- all of these pix were taken with my new camera and jewels' and cy's 50mm 1.4f lens. i'm getting my own soon. :)

shoe-fly

i hemmed and hawed about participating in NoBloShoeMo this year. actually, i didn't give it much thought until the month already started, then i was thinking, "oh, but i don't have nearly enough shoes do complete it without repeats!"

uh, i was wrong.

i have more than enough shoes (wait, there's no such thing as "enough shoes!") to go thirty days without repeats. that i've already purchased three new pairs this month (way to go, nordstrom half-yearly!) and am well on my way to buying another today (yay for DSW coupons given to you by your bestest friend that make shoes practically free!) [aside: this has got to be a record of sorts -- using parenthesis THREE times in a teeny paragraph?! /aside]

wanna see what i've bought lately? (it was a rhetorical question)

had to give this diesel pair a try, if only because they were such
a good deal (cheaper at macy's) and pretty darn comfy

but the truth of the matter is that i just can't be arsed to photograph my shoes on a daily basis, then post 'em. so i've only done it once.

but what's humorous about the whole thing to me is that the particular saturday morning on which i took this pic i was lamenting that i didn't have any brown sneakers. a quick look-through of the ol' closet revealed that yes, i indeed had brown sneakers that had never been worn. ooops. when i was in hawaii earlier this year we stumbled upon the greatest deals at foot locker, of all places. between their already marked-down shoes and my friend's cousin's discount, i walked away with these bad boys and their twin in black for a cool $17 a pair. had i not been blinded by DISCOUNTS! i would have purchased a few more pairs to sell on eBay to fund my shoe addiction.

cause, really? let's face it. it really is an addiction. and one for which i'm not ready to accept help.

movie madness

i've long said there's no therapy like retail therapy. sometimes said in jest, i do tend to believe in the healing powers of flexing your credit (or cash) muscle.

which is why this is on its way to me.

along with 10 hd-dvds to get me started. and now i feel like one of the cool kids that can change her netflix profile to reflect the "hd-dvd" status.

movie life at casa de bee may never be the same.

mama's got a brand new bag

i bought this and it's huge! so far it's been great to haul various and sundry items about, namely a game of uno (to j and c's bbq), dinner (to babysit), dvds and books (thanks, lis!) 8 bottles of pellegrino water (looted from a catering event) and new shoes (post-shopping).

it's so purdy!

june 2 was two of my favorite friends' birthdays: hers and hers. the big 2-8! i'm not far behind, ladies. hope you both had wonderful days!

...
.
...

speaking of birthdays, my newest first cousin was born on friday june 1. michael is the first first cousin i've had in 8 years, and my uncle's first child. so exciting!

...
.
...

and yet more birthday wishes! my mother, who is exactly 30 years and 2 months to the day older than i am, celebrates one today. happy birthday, mom!

...

...

i'm still laughing about a couple of friday nights ago. lis and tim called me up to do dinner and general hanging out, and off we went to a local pizza joint. who should happen to be there unexpectedly? jewels and cy! great minds and all that. funny thing was, i couldn't place cy. i knew who it was, but just couldn't figure out what he was doing there.

sometimes my brain just doesn't work.

the dirty thirty

I've made a decision, and I hope that by declaring it publicly that I'll stick to it.

I've decided that for my 30th birthday (which is exactly 2.5 years* from today, for those keeping score at home) I will buy myself a pair of these:

I bought it last year, and while it's no Bose speaker set, it still packs a punch and is far more portable than anything I've seen.
