media update: 2008 in review

i saw a whopping 178 movies in 2008. this seems extraordinarily high, especially considering i only read 12 books this year. methinks 2009 should include more reading and perhaps less movie watching. i added a lot of good stuff to my now exclusively digital music collection. earlier in the year i got rid of the last few CDs i owned and now love having a portable (doubly backed up) music library.

of the 178 movies i saw, a handful were repeats and are included in the total number. here are the best movies i saw in 2008, none of which are repeats, and 3 of which i saw in a theater:

God Grew Tired of Us
Taxi to the Dark Side
Sound and Fury
Disfigured
Life is Beautiful
Slumdog Millionaire
Milk

of the books i read in 2008 my favorites are as follows:

Elizabeth Gilbert, "Eat, Pray, Love"
Kim Edwards, "The Memory Keeper's Daughter"
edited by David Sedaris, "Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules"
Jhumpa Lahiri, "Unaccumtomed Earth"

music. i love music. here are some of my favorites from 2008:

Jenny Lewis "Acid Tongue"
"American Teen" soundtrack
The Black Kids "Partie Traumatic"
The New Pornographers "Mass Romantic"

but which song(s) will remind me most of 2008?
Simon and Garfunkel "America" trip to Tahoe in January
The Pierces "Boring" trip to Vancouver, BC/Seattle in April
Estelle "American Boy" Long Beach in July
RJD2 "A Beautiful Mine" trip to Boston in August
Rilo Kiley, "With Arms Outstretched" trip to the cabin in August
T.I. "Whatever You Like" trip to Orange County in September
Beast "Mr. Hurricane" trip to Los Angeles in November
T.I. "Live Your Life" trip to the cabin for Thanksgiving

  1. For the record- I saw Slumdog millionaire- loved it but I felt like I had to beat someone up/ go on a run afterwards- maybe 2009 will include more movies for me :)
    Miss you
