iSick

i seem to be in the minority when i say i don't want an iphone. and really, i don't want one, my blackberry is fine and dandy. plus, with all the hype that's been surrounding the item, i want it even less! i do have to say that their original teevee advert for it, aired during the oscars, was awesome, but that's just because i love movies.

that malls and apple stores have had to hire security guards to tame the crowds makes me roll my eyes. it's a phone, fercryingoutloud.

it's news that steve wozniak is waiting in line for an iphone when there was a potential TERROR PLOT unveiled today.

thus, iSick of hearing about the iPhone.

(lis, hope you were able to get one!)

where the idea was born

a CHiP came out of nowhere on 80 and got behind us, flashing his lights. scared the hell outta both of us, but mostly tara, as the driver. turns out, he wasn't even after us. appropriately enough, "life is a highway" was the song playing on one of the few radio stations that came in. the aftermath (she's laughing, not crying):

upon our arrival at 1 am

tower of oz
the tower of oz, er, silver legacy

reno at sunrise, as we were leaving the el dorado

thunderbird
i'm a sucker for great signs, design-wise, and reno is full of 'em

summer solstice

"Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it."
"the great gatsby"

oh, daisy, i couldn't agree more. but this year? this year i remembered. it's a quarter to eight, and the sun shows no sign of going down.
it's one of those small things that deserves recognition, this first day of summer. i didn't do anything particularly special, but spending time with friends, having lunch outside, and now watching a woody allen flick have been the perfect ways to ring it in.

welcome, summer.

mama's got a brand new bag

i bought this and it's huge! so far it's been great to haul various and sundry items about, namely a game of uno (to j and c's bbq), dinner (to babysit), dvds and books (thanks, lis!) 8 bottles of pellegrino water (looted from a catering event) and new shoes (post-shopping).

it's so purdy!

...
.
...

june 2 was two of my favorite friends' birthdays: hers and hers. the big 2-8! i'm not far behind, ladies. hope you both had wonderful days!

...
.
...

speaking of birthdays, my newest first cousin was born on friday june 1. michael is the first first cousin i've had in 8 years, and my uncle's first child. so exciting!

...
.
...

and yet more birthday wishes! my mother, who is exactly 30 years and 2 months to the day older than i am, celebrates one today. happy birthday, mom!

...
.
...

i'm still laughing about a couple of friday nights ago. lis and tim called me up to do dinner and general hanging out, and off we went to a local pizza joint. who should happen to be there unexpectedly? jewels and cy! great minds and all that. funny thing was, i couldn't place cy. i knew who it was, but just couldn't figure out what he was doing there.

sometimes my brain just doesn't work.

what does a soprano do, but sing?

if you watch "the sopranos" but haven't seen the series finale, read no further.
if you don't watch "the sopranos," YOU SHOULD, but feel free to skip this post.

oh, david chase. how i love thee, but also despise thee. i had been looking forward to last night's episode for weeks now, certainly not because i wanted the show to end, but because i wanted to know how it would end. i mean, how do you end the best show on pay-tv, and arguably the best show on tv, period?

as frustrated as i am not to have a nicely wrapped up conclusion, i am satisfied that the show didn't go out like so many others do, which is to say quickly and hurriedly. as the end of the series drew closer, i had so many questions (ade never came back, will sil live, will meadow be a victim of a terrorist attack, etc.) that i wondered if it would even be possible to wrap them up conclusively.

the truth is that i was so focused on my thoughts of "what's going to happen?," particularly in the final scene at the diner, that i didn't notice so many of the things other viewers are pointing out. ("the suspense is killing me...i hope it'll last," anyone?)

the Boy Scouts at the diner -- were they the same ones in the penultimate episode?

i thought Tony was looking in on himself in the diner, but perhaps it was just the bizarre editing that cut from Tony outside, in his leather jacket, looking in to Tony inside, jacket off and sitting in a booth, in mere nanoseconds.
speaking of seconds, the cut to black scene felt so much longer than its 4 or so seconds.

but again, this is just television, and above all, a welcome escape from reality.

sleepy deprived

last night, over a pitcher of beer, tara suggested we head to reno. at 8 pm. pshaw, says i. then i mulled it over. why not? it's been ages (if ever) since i was that spontaneous. we each headed to our respective homes, threw a couple things in a bag and hit the road! we officially left about 9 pm, making it to reno at 1 am. we hit fitzgerald's first, followed by the el dorado. we left the el dorado a little after 6 am, and by the time we got to lake tahoe's north shore where her parent's condo is, it was 7 am.

being awake for over 24 hours is not my favorite thing.

we headed to our rooms and i snoozed for a couple of hours before "waking up" (i use the term loosely, as i never really fell asleep) at 11.

the trip was a blast, and i'll share pics later.

now? i'm off to bed before 9 pm on a saturday night.

movers and shakers

if you know me/read me, you know i love(d) "arrested development." so much so that i joined in an effort to save the show . the best stunt was sending fox executives stress squeeze toys in the shape of a banana. alas, the efforts didn't work, but we still have three seasons to enjoy on dvd.

the die-hard fans of "jericho" (which, by the way i've never seen an episode of, nor even heard of before this) have succeeded in their efforts to save their show. apparently there was a line in the season finale that referenced peanuts, which sparked the efforts to send literally tons of nuts to cbs executives. cbs executives responded by ordering 7 more episodes of the show.

from the letter from cbs:

"To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of "Jericho" for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more "Jericho," we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that "Jericho" will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting "Jericho" on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of "Jericho" in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler

President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts : )"

i'm reminded of a quote from anthropologist margaret mead, although using it in the context of television shows it seems wasteful: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." the point being, of course, that if you believe in something, go for it wholeheartedly.

and we can all use that kind of encouragement now and again.
